Our Yarns

Nestled in the heart of old town Anacortes, Fidalgo Artisan Yarn & Clothing is home to luxury hand-dyed yarns: from lace to Aran weights. We often joke about an overabundance of beauty; our shop is filled with thousands of skeins and colors in over 20 blends.

What we love, of course, is all of it. The myriad colors rise like magic (and years and years of creative experience) out of Lori’s dye pots. The ways in which all the different fibers absorb those colors so differently — some shiny and bright, others heathered, subtle and earthy. The natural fibers themselves, and the different ways in which they behave — some crisp and decisive, others elegant and drapey and soft –  create a unique experience for us all.

Our guests sometimes gasp as they walk through the door.  When they can’t decide or seem a little overwhelmed, our advice is to choose that first skein – the one that immediately caught their eye and beckoned their fingers.

In addition to the ever changing kaleidoscope of freshly-dyed yarns, we also offer a selection of coned yarns for weaving (and also great for knitting and crocheting!) The UKI cottons are sold by the ounce which we wind off or you can purchase the entire cone for a 10% discount.  We also have a wide selection of Harrisville Shetland cones and many colors of the natural fiber Brassard 8/2 cones available.

At our online shop, we feature just a few of our yarns.  Peruse our full selection below and come for a visit and see for yourself!

–

DK/SPORT    ~    Recommended Needle size: 5-7 US   |      Gauge: 21-24 st = 4”

Merino DK: $20.50

100% Fine Superwash Merino.  Approximately 100g = 246 yards

Super soft, superwash.  This is our most popular yarn and our go-to yarn for kid-knits and adult-knits alike.  It is springy and dyes in vibrant, beautiful colors.  This is also the base yarn for our Medley DK and Radiant DK yarns.

–

Medley: $22.50

100% Fine Superwash Merino.  Approximately 100g = 246 yards

A medley of color, hence the name.  This yarn is dyed with a special technique Lori has developed that features color transition.  This is the yarn as our Merino DK and and Radiant DK and is soft, springy and dyes in vibrant, beautiful colors.

–

Medley Sport: $24.50

100% Fine Superwash Merino.  Approximately 100g = 342 yards

This yarn is dyed with the same technique as our Medley using our Rosario Sport base.  The colors are beautiful and the yarn, springy and soft.  This is becoming one of our most popular yarns.

–

Winter Silk: $25.00

70% Baby Alpaca  |  30% Tussah Silk.  Approximately 100g = 276 yards

This sport weight yarn is lovely to knit with and to wear.  The soft baby alpaca paired with the sheen of silk makes for a warm yarn that drapes beautifully.  Perfect for shawls, wraps, cowls, and drapey sweaters.

–

Rosario Sport: $22.50

100% Fine Superwash Merino.  Approximately 100g = 342 yards

This is our newest yarn and is made from the same very fine fiber as our Merino DK.   So soft, this wool can be worn next to the skin and dyes up beautifully.  This yarn has excellent stitch definition and is a great choice for a wide variety of garments and accessories.

_

Rylie and Me: $25.50

50% Baby Alpaca | 25% Linen | 25% Mulberry Silk.  Approximately 100g = 274 yards

Rylie & Me is a luxurious blend of all-natural fibers.  Each type of fiber takes the dye a little bit differently, adding an interesting visual texture to this sport weight yarn.

–

Silk Shimmer: $34.50

63% Silk | 23% Kid Mohair  | 10% Nylon | 4% Polyester.  Approximately 100g = 330 yards

This a BEAUTIFUL novelty yarn with a lovely hand and slight shimmer.  It is beautiful when used for shawls, cowls, and event sweaters.

–

Silk Naturelle: $21.00

Silk Noil.  Approximately 100g = 300 yards

We call this our ‘cotton’ yarn as we don’t dye cottons.  This yarn is drapey and knits up beautifully for summer sweaters and tanks.  The color palette is subtle and pretty.  This yearn is available in the spring and summer months.

–

Euroflax: $19.50

100% Linen.  Approximately 100g = 270 yards

This is the only yarn we purchase already dyed as the colors and quality are fabulous.  Euroflax is a long line linen made out of flax fiber. The yarn is double-boiled and steamed to give it a very soft and supple quality. Euroflax is great for home decor projects, but also fantastic for garments. Like hemp, flax gets softer with each wash and wear.

–

Radiant DK: $49.50

100% Merino Superwash Wool.  Approximately 200g = 496 yards

Our Radiant DK is the same yarn as our Merino DK but with a continuous flow of colors.  Each cake is dyed individually.  With an almost 500 yards, use it for shawls, sweaters, scarfs and make fabulous truly one-of-a-kind garments.  So soft, this wool is a fine micron count of 19-22 and can be worn next to the skin or used for baby blankets, sweaters, and hats.

FINGERING WEIGHT    ~    Recommended Needle size: 3-5 US   |      Gauge: 23-26 st = 4”

Rustic Silk: $29.50

65% Silk  |  35% Linen.  Approximately 100g = 441 yards

Another great yarn to use for summer garments.  This interesting blend is easy to knit and crochet and is somewhat textural.  The dye ‘takes’ on the silk, but will not bond to the linen so the yarn has an appealing heathered look.

–

Sahara Silk: $39.50

65% Silk  |  35% Baby Camel.  Approximately 100g = 440 yards

“Luxury defined” with the warmth and lightness of fine baby camel and the drape and sheen of silk.  Sahara Silk is a luxuriously soft yarn — lovely on the hands as you work, and even lovelier to wear. One skein is plenty for a cozy scarf or an elegant shawl, two makes a beautifully big wrap.

–

Marine Silk Fingering: $30.50

51% Silk  |  29% Wool  |  20% SeaCell.  Approximately  100g = 496 yards

This fine fingering weight yarn has the same unusual fiber blend as our Marine Silk Lace and makes for a lusciously soft yarn with a lovely drape and feel. The silk and sea cell bring a magnificent luster and the soft merino binds it together.  It is a bit delicate and a treat to work with and wear. In a light fingering weight, this is a luxurious yarn especially good for cowls and shawls.  Featured in our following patterns:  Leafy Caplet and Fidalgo Evenings Shawl.

–

Cashmere Cloud: $34.50

65% Cashmere  |  35% Cultivated Silk.  Approximately 50g = 221 yards

Cashmere Cloud, a new silk & cashmere fingering weight yarn for us, is decadence defined. It dyes up beautifully, is unbelievably soft, and has a tendency to jump off the shelves into unsuspecting (but then very happy) hands. With just over 200 yds per skein, one is enough for a sweetly indulgent cowl or small scarf, and sometimes a cozy bit of silky warmth can really save the day.

–

Halo: $22.50

50% Fine Alpaca  |  50% Wool.  Approximately 100g = 440 yards

Halo is our first yarn made exclusively for us and to our specifications.  It is a lovely fingering-weight yarn that is soft and yet has structure.  Perfect for Fair Isle garment knitting, warm shawls, cowls, etc…  It is also available in a Halo-Mini, same fiber content but only 20g = 88 yards.

For those of us who don’t like superwash wool, this one is for you!

–

Copper Twist: $11.50

88% Superwash Merino  |  12% Nylon embedded with copper.  Approximately 50g = 218 yards

Copper Twist is both playful and practical, and utterly unique! It was originally designed as a sock yarn in a typical fingering-weight, but has a texture all its own with a superwash merino core and a wrap of nylon embedded with copper filament. The copper was added for its antimicrobial properties (perfect for socks!) but Copper Twist works up beautifully in everything from cowls to garments to hats and more. And we love the way it dyes up, with an almost tweedy effect due to the wrap taking the dye ever so slightly differently than the merino wool.

–

One Foot Two Foot: $12.00

85% Superwash Merino  |  15% Nylon.  Approximately 50g = 218 yards

One Foot Two Foot is a wonderful sock yarn with a smooth, tight spin, made from soft merino wool and a bit of nylon for stretch and durability. It also works up beautifully in scarves and shawls, garments and more, and has phenomenal stitch definition for lacier work. Come on in and try it!

–

Fidalgo Fingering: $21.50

65% Merino  |  35% Rayon of Bamboo.  Approximately 100g = 498 yards

This fingering weight yarn has the softness and drape of the best merino, with a bamboo crispness that makes for wonderful stitch definition. Ideal for lacework, but substantial enough for scarves, cowls, lightweight sweaters, especially when knit with our mohair lace.

–

LACE WEIGHT   ~    Recommended Needle Size: 1-3 US    |   Gauge: 27-32 st = 4”

Mohair Lace: $18.50

70% Kid Mohair | 30% Nylon.  Approximately 50g = 495 yards

Our lace weight kid mohair is soft!  It’s wonderful against the skin, even for folks who sometimes have difficulty wearing mohair. This fine lace is delicate yet sturdy enough to use on its own for light-as-a cloud knits.  We also love using it held with other yarns to add a halo and a bit of softness and color play.

–

Ethereal Silk: $42.50

100% Mulberry Silk.  Approximately 100g = 875 yards

This hard-to-find single-ply silk yarn is magnificent and ‘ethereal’.  This silk is fairly heavy and knits up like a dream.  Weavers have also use it with beautiful results.  If you have been searching for a truly special yarn for a truly special project, this is an excellent choice.

–

Marine Silk Lace: $32.50

51% Silk  |  29% Wool  |  20% SeaCell.  Approximately 100g = 882 yards

This fine lace weight yarn has the same unusual fiber blend as our Marine Silk Fingering and makes for a lusciously soft yarn with a lovely drape and feel. The silk and sea cell bring a magnificent luster and the soft merino binds it together.  It is a bit delicate and a treat to work with and wear. In a lace weight, this is a luxurious yarn especially good for lace work.

–

Queen Anne’s Lace: $34.00

70% Superwash Merino  |  30% Silk.  Approximately 100g = 1100 yards

Queen Anne’s Lace is a super fine lace weight yarn of 70% Superwash Merino and 30% Silk. At about 1100 yards per 100g skein, this is a LOT of yarn! Wonderfully delicate, richly dyed, perfect for fine lace work.
